Accessibility and Mobility Lab

Research on human-robot mobility systems that improve accessibility for blind and low-vision people

The Accessibility and Mobility Lab studies intelligent mobility systems, spatial understanding, and interaction techniques that support safe and self-directed travel for blind and low-vision people. With a focus on real-world deployment of the AI Suitcase, the lab explores social navigation that respects user agency as well as the surrounding human environment.

Mission

Mission

We aim to transform mobility for blind people from a passive guided experience into an experience in which users can actively choose how they move. The lab combines robotics, machine learning, and human-computer interaction to build accessible mobility technologies that work in the real world.

Research

Research Areas

01 / Research Track

Active Mapping

We investigate methods for acquiring and updating spatial maps efficiently and safely so that robots can be deployed in new environments. This includes adaptation to environmental change and presenting map-derived information in accessible ways for users.

02 / Research Track

Shared Control

We study how a robot and a blind traveler can share control authority during navigation, adjusting the level of intervention to fit the situation. This work seeks a balance between confidence, safety, and user agency while taking surrounding pedestrians and social context into account.

03 / Research Track

End-to-End Navigation Models

We develop learning-based navigation models that connect sensor inputs to mobility control, enabling robots to act flexibly in complex indoor and outdoor environments. The work emphasizes robustness, interpretability, and practical human intervention in real deployments.
